As if it wasn't bad enough that America must grapple with electing a white nationalist into office, I recently had the unfortunate experience of seeing Insidious: The Further You Fear at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. I am not entirely sure what I saw. No, it wasn't horror. The comedy wasn't funny. The actors quite literally missed their marks and left a dead stage several times throughout the show. We could all see the stage hands back stage since their bare arms were quite well lit. Their use of video tech should have been an easy hit, and yet, somehow, they also missed that. Was this play really connected with James Wan's name? Did Blumhouse really greenlight this? And why didn't the Overture Center vet the show before booking it? To say it was an amateur production is honestly quite insulting to hard working amateurs! Why was the story so convoluted and never ending? Why, oh why, did they fuck up such an iconic baddie, the Lipstick Demon? I want my questions answered, but I doubt I'll get any. I don't usually feel like I've wasted time or money seeing art, but there's a first time for everything. It's rare that I get a night out, and being refunded a measly $25 for a $70 (!) ticket seems insulting, when it wasn't my fault for wasting my time (this time). I feel trolled. I also think the most insulting and infuriating part of the whole ordeal is how much publications like Fangoria are choosing to continue to promote it. This tells me that their opinions and endorsements can be easily bought, which is disheartening.
